EU's Mogherini: Confident U.S. Will Reach Political Consensus on Iran Deal

Tehran, April 17, IRNA – The European Union's foreign policy chief Wednesday voiced confidence that U.S. lawmakers would endorse a nuclear deal with Iran, reacting to an agreement among senators in Washington that will give Congress review power over the outcome of the talks. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini, speaking in Lübeck, Germany, after she joined a two-day meeting of the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven leading nations, said international diplomats would work to create a political consensus on the deal in the countries involved in the talks even as final negotiations continue. 'I am confident that this will be the case,' Mogherini said about whether such a consensus would be reached. Senators in Washington on Tuesday forged a bipartisan compromise that would give Congress review power over a final nuclear deal with Iran. The White House said President Barack Obama would sign the legislation. 'I'm confident that the U.S.--not only the U.S. leadership but also the U.S. Congress--will understand that this agreement is an agreement in the interests of the security of everybody in the region and worldwide,' Mogherini said, according to news agency reports.
