Ex-PM Thai concerned about draft charter

BANGKOK, March 1 (TNA) - Thailand’s former prime minister Abhisit Jejjajiva says he is concerned about the new draft charter which specifies that a prime minister does not need to be an elected member of the House of Representatives. Abhisit said that Thai politics had moved forward and advanced from the early days and the draft constitution would draw attention from people in Thailand and abroad, who were closely following the country’s political developments, saying that it could “cause a crisis.” The Democrat Party chief said further that he was against a clause in the new charter which said cabinet ministers must not be elected members of the Lower House as that would “destroy the parliamentary system.” He noted that several countries in the world require that ministers be elected MPs only as they would put more concentration on the parliament’s works, saying that a public referendum should be held after the draft charter was complete.
