FM: Iran Provided Brahimi With Plan For Resolving Syria Crisis

Tehran, Oct 15, IRNA – Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said that he has provided the UN and Arab League joint envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey with a written unofficial plan for resolving the Syrian crisis. Salehi made the remarks in a joint press conference with Brahimi in Tehran on Sunday. “The Islamic Republic of Iran has presented its written and unofficial proposal and elaborated in detail about its proposal for resolving the Syrian crisis,” he added. Salehi noted that a copy of Iran’s proposal has been submitted to the Syrian government. “I had two other meetings with Brahimi before, one in Cairo and another one in New York. We discussed Syria in detail during those meetings and exchanged views,” the foreign minister said. US Special envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, for his part, said that the United Nations and the Arab League which he represents understand the sensitivity of the issue of Syrian crisis and hence they reiterate on an urgency for resolving the issue in the shortest possible time. He said that the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon wants a rapid halt to the violence in Syria. The UN Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi arrived in Tehran Sunday evening to hold talks with Iranian officials on the Syrian crisis. He was welcomed by Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African affairs, Amir Hossein Abdollahiyan at Mehrabad Airport. His visit to Tehran takes place in line with Tehran’s diplomatic efforts to help solve the crisis in the Arab state. He is scheduled to discuss the latest developments in Syria with Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi during his visit in Iran, the first since he took over the mission as UN envoy. He will also talk with Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili. Prior to Tehran, Brahimi earlier toured Saudi Arabia and Turkey to discuss Syrian developments.
