FM Official: Iran Never After Geneva II Participation

Tehran, Jan 21, IRNA – Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham stressed that Iran never sought to take part in the Geneva II Conference. During her Tuesday morning press briefing, she said Iran has never applied for participation in the Geneva 2 conference. She expressed regret over the UN chiefˈs move to withdraw his invitation to Iran for attending the talks. Stressing Iranˈs clear stands on the Geneva 2 conference which entailed its participation with no pre-conditions, she noted that the Iranian foreign minister as well as Iranˈs ambassador to the United Nations have both already voiced Iranˈs views. She said they had made it clear that Iran would abide by no pre-conditions. Afkham underlined that Iran had expressed its views in vivid terms in phone conversations with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and his envoy in the Syrian affairs Lakhdar Brahimi. Also on Tuesday, Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amirabdollahian said Iran is not to participate in the Geneva II Conference because of the US irrational insistence on setting conditions for it. He explained that despite Iranˈs readiness for unconditional participation in the Geneva 2 talks, the US insisted on setting preconditions for the country./end
