Foreign Attack On Syria Unlikely: Deputy FM

Tehran, Aug 11, IRNA – Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab Countries and Africa Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that due to Syria’s strong armed forces the possibility of launching a foreign military attack on Syria seems to be unlikely. Amir Abdollahian made the remark at the end of a consultative meeting on Syria and in a press conference in Tehran late Thursday. “In case of foreign military attack on Syria, the Syrian army can defend that country because Syria is in the front line of resistance against foreign aggressors,” he added. Asked whether President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will attend the upcoming emergency meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference in Mecca, Amir Abdollahian responded that President Ahmadinejad will attend the Mecca conference. In response to a question on whether Saudi King Abdullah will attend the upcoming meeting of Non-Aligned Movement to be held in Tehran, the official said that since King Abdullah is sick and he is in good physical conditions the Saudi delegation will most probably be at a lower level. “Some of the opposition forces inside Syria were expecting the collapse of the capital Damascus, but we will surely witness the return of peace and stability to Aleppo and other Syrian cities in the coming days,” Amir Abdollahian added while noting that the Syrian crisis can only be solved through diplomacy./end
