FOREIGN MINISTER MEETS WITH UNESCO DIRECTOR-GENERAL

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Within a visit to France, the Mongolia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr L.Purevsuren last Friday met with Ms Irina Bokova, the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in Paris. Ms Bokova noted that Mongolia has been an active member of the UNESCO, participating in the organization’s actions and strengthening its position at the organization. For example, Mongolia has initiated resolutions on the UN Decade of Literacy and on supporting a goal of forming global civilization through the education for democracy. Mongolia also has contributed to saving cultural heritage, Ms Bokova said. Noting an importance of expanding the cooperation with the UNESCO, the Foreign Minister highlighted that education is the vital sector for Mongolia to determine future development, and it is important to support the education on democracy and human rights and to collaborating in the environmental sector. In frames of these goals, Mongolia has hosted international conferences of the Community of Democracies and of the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC), launching some specific projects, he said. The UNESCO Director-General highly spoke the international cooperation foundation, and hoped that the Mongolian democratic experience and position will significantly contribute to the Post-2015 Developmental Goals. During the meeting, the Foreign Minister put forward a proposal to implement a joint project within the UNESCO.
