FOREIGN MINISTER MEETS US CONGRESSMAN

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Within an official visit to the USA, Mongolia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr L.Purevsuren met last week with Mr Peter Roskam, a member of the US Congress, in Washington DC. Mongolia has been successfully developing through democratic reforms for a free economic system, the FM noted and said Mongolia is really thankful to the U.S. people and government for supporting this developmental way, chosen by the Mongolians. Purevsuren also mentioned about submitting a draft resolution to the US House of Representatives on occasion of the 25th anniversary of Mongolian democracy, and asked the Congressman--the chairman of the Partnership Program for Democracy (PPD)--to back this resolution. The Mongolia-USA inter-parliamentary ties have been intensifying, he said and thanked the PPD for playing a vital role in making these ties closer, hoping this cooperation will expand. Expressing a satisfaction with meeting the FM of Mongolia, Mr Roskam said he is glad for the cooperation with Mongolia who is developing a democratic way. He expressed a hope in Mongolia's bright future and said he will fully support Mongolia in order to elevate the cooperation. The PPD comprises some 20 members of two political parties which have seats in the U.S. Congress, its main purposes are to support those countries that newly developing the democracy and to share experiences with them. Founded in 1990, the PPD used to be a working group with a purpose of backing the legislative bodies of ten countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and it was expanded as the Committee for Supporting Democracy at the House of Representatives in 2005. In 2013, it was changed as the Partnership for Democracy, cooperating with the legislative bodies of 16 countries. Mongolia was involved in the program in 2006.
