Georgia’s association agreement with EU to support growth of Greek investments

Tbilisi, Georgia, April 24 By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend: Georgian Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze met with her Greek counterpart Evangelos Venizelos during her visit to Athens. The sides discussed bilateral relations, as well as the process of European integration of Georgia, the Georgian foreign ministry told Trend on April 23. "The meeting was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere," Venizelos said at the joint press-conference after the meeting. "We emphasized the special relations between our two countries," Venizelos said. "Georgia will be even closer to Europe after signing an association agreement. This will contribute to an increase in Greek investments in Georgia." Panjikidze stressed that 2014 is of particular importance in the relations between Georgia and the European Union. An association agreement will be signed in June 2014. "We are pleased that this important event will happen when Greece presides over the EU," Panjikidze said. "We are confident that the Greek government will play an important role in the beginning of a new stage in the relations between Georgia and the EU." Panjikidze spoke about the country's recent progress in the Euro-Atlantic integration. The situation in the region, the crisis in Ukraine and the relations with Russia were discussed. "The Georgian government has chosen a very correct strategy in this situation, trying to normalize the relations with Russia in a way that does not harm its relations with NATO and the EU," Venizelos said. The foreign ministers stressed the importance of exchanging high-level visits. Panjikidze invited her Greek counterpart to visit Georgia.
