German Greens Urge Iran Invite For Int'l Talks On Syria

Berlin, Aug 12, IRNA -- The head of Germany's Green party, Claudia Roth on Saturday stressed Iran should be invited to an international meeting on Syria aimed at ending the violence in that country. Talking to the Frankfurt-based daily Frankfurter Rundschau, Roth said countries like Russia, China, Saudi Arabia and Iran should be brought to the table in order to help settle the conflict in Syria. She proposed Turkey as a likely venue for such talks. The Green opposition leader urged Germany to back such a new diplomatic initiative. Meanwhile, Roth called on the European Union to play a greater role in resolving the Syrian crisis. She warned that the Syrian conflict could spill into other countries in the region, leading ultimately to a major religious and ethnic war. Roth reiterated her opposition to a foreign military intervention in Syria as well as providing western military aid to the rebels./end
