German-Iranian parliamentary group eyes deeper political dialogue

Berlin, March 8, IRNA -- The deputy chairman of the German-Iranian Parliamentary Group Thomas Feist called in an exclusive interview with IRNA for 'intensifying the political dialogue' between Tehran and Berlin. As a member the German-Iranian Parliamentary Group, I want to promote 'the intensification of the political dialogue' whose basis is mutual trust on the German as well as Iranian side, said the Christian Democratic legislator. We are interested in further improving German-Iranian ties and boosting people-to-people contacts can be helpful in this regard, he added. Feist urged also closer cooperation in scientific and cultural areas which according to him, could also include joint research programs. Referring to Iran's regional role, Feist said Iran remains an 'important player' in the Middle East. Iran views itself also as an important player in the region and through its link with the non-aligned states, Iran is 'an important element' of a stabilizing policy, the conservative lawmaker reiterated. Feist hailed specifically Tehran's stabilizing role in war-ravaged Afghanistan. Asked about prospects for a comprehensive Iran nuclear accord, Feist stressed he was 'very optimistic' that a deal could be reached within the deadline. It is in 'the common interest' of all sides to have such an agreement and they are all acutely aware of the significance of such an accord. Furthermore, Iran knows such a deal would also upgrade its status internationally, the German politician said. All relevant parties are capable of reaching 'a sustainable and good' deal. 'The biggest obstacle remains lack of trust on both sides, some of which is even justified.'
