GOVERNMENT APPRECIATES OT’S HEALTH AND SAFETY STANDARDS

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ A joint working group--Ministries of Labor and of Population Development and Social Welfare and a non-governmental organization of physically challenged persons--have recently visited the Oyu Tolgoi mine. The group said the government is satisfied with the health and safety policies being implemented by OT, also with the work being done in this respect and its outcome, and added that this experience must be introduced in all other mining companies. The objective of this visit was to learn from OT’s experience in the health and safety management policies, to see how they comply with international standards and whether this experience can become a benchmark for other mining companies in the country. The visit was paid as a part of the work being run by these Ministries to amend the law on social welfare of physically challenged persons. Mr J.Batkhuyag, a Deputy Labour Minister, said:"I can say that OT’s experience is a unique one which has been able to put in place an international class health and safety standards that can be applied at a small business unit to a major mining company. We are confident that OT will work with us and also support us in introducing this management standards at the national level and at other national companies." Another member of the group B.Narantuya, a Head of Legal department at the Population development and social welfare Ministry, said:"We visited the plants and the open pit at the mine, and also took part in a safety training session and we have seen for ourselves how the law on labor safety is being strictly complied with at the mine. We are happy that we got this opportunity to visit the OT mine as our Ministry is trying to understand how to prevent industrial accidents."
