Govt. duty bound to monitor hijab observation, Iranian MP says

TEHRAN,July 1(MNA) – MP Ali Motahari said that the government is duty bound to monitor observation of hijab (the Islamic dress code) and take actions against breaching it. According to Islamic sharia law, when enjoining good and forbidding wrong requires practical actions it is the government’s duty to take necessary measures to enforce hijab, the ANA news agency quoted him as saying on Monday. He added that the government cannot remain silent about serious breaching of Islamic dress code. Such issues pose threats to the foundation of the family and the government should fulfill its responsibilities in this respect, the vocal MP stated. Last week, MPs summoned Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli to the Majlis to ask him for an explanation about the observation of hijab in the country. But the MPs were not convinced by Fazli’s response. 64 of the 218 MPs present voted in favor of accepting his explanation, 135 voted against accepting it, and 15 MPs abstained, and thus Fazli received a warning.
