Hamas's political bureau chief says Fatah-Hamas reconciliation must be successful for Palestine's future
DOHA (A.A) - February 14, 2012 - Khaled Meshal, Hamas's political bureau chief, has said that Fatah-Hamas reconciliation must be successful for the future of Palestine.
Speaking to AA correspondent in Doha, Meshal said that Palestinian, Arab and international parties were holding talks for success of the Doha Declaration signed under the auspices of Qatar's Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and himself.
The reconciliation must be realized, he said, adding that because presence of two governments in West Bank and Gaza meant not only political division between Hamas and Fatah but also a geographical and social division in the Palestinian community.
A single government till elections would unite internal front of Palestine against Israeli occupation, he said.
Meshal said that according to the agreement, Mahmoud Abbas would be head of national reconciliation government.
Abbas's re-election would contribute to unity in Palestine and preserve negotiation and dialogue channels with the UN for the Palestinian cause, he said.
Meshal said that he was hopeful that Doha Declaration would be successful, but also he was concerned, because Israel or other external powers might launch efforts to prevent such peace agreement.
Hamas and Fatah assumed a serious attitude regarding the agreement this time, he said.
Meshal added that he would not run for leadership of Hamas again.
