Head of UNHCR Office meets Azerbaijani Ombudsman

Baku, May 3 (AzerTAc). Azerbaijani Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) Elmira Suleymanova has met head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Baku Office Dag Sigurdson. They discussed ways of enhancing bilateral cooperation between the Azerbaijani Ombudsman’s Office and UNHCR in protecting the rights of IDPs and refugees. Suleymanova noted that the problems of IDPs and refugees were one of the key priorities of her activities. Sigurdson hailed cooperation with the Azerbaijani Ombudsman’s Office, noting the importance of providing free legal advice to IDPs and refugees, including women, elder people and children. The Azerbaijani Commissioner for Human Rights noted the 12th Baku International Ombudsmen Conference was dedicated to the issues of the rights of women and children and marked the anniversaries of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, as well as the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Azerbaijani Ombudsman also pointed out that a draft bill on Family Planning and Reproductive Health had recently been discussed at the Azerbaijani Parliament.
