Indian Muslims Observe “Ashura” Across Country

New Delhi, Nov 26, IRNA – To commemorate martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), Indian Muslims, mainly Shias, Sunday observed “Ashura” across the country with grief. Dressed in black clothes, beating chests and chanting “Ya Husain” Shia Muslims observed the day with religious reverence and solemnity to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS). In Delhi the main procession was taken out from Shia Masjid at Kashmere Gate which was culminated at Shrine “Panje-Sharief”. The people mourned for their beloved Imam remembering his martyrdom in Karbala, Iraq. Similar mourning processions, marked by self-flagellation, were taken out on the streets across the country. In the evening procession, religious scholars narrated the battle of Karbala that enables the mourners to relive the pain and sorrowed endured by Imam Hussain (AS) and his family and followers. The day of Ashura is on the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar and marks the climax of the Mourning of Muharram. Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the third Shia Imam, along with members of his family and close friends were martyred during a bloody battle in Karbala in the year 61 AH (680 AD)./end
