Indonesia, Egypt Should Optimize Diplomatic Relations: Deputy Minister

Yogyakarta, May 5 (Antara) -- Indonesia and Egypt should optimize their diplomatic relations to ensure that they are equal and beneficial for both countries, Indonesian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdurrahman Mohammad Fachir said here on Tuesday. "It is possible that behind the harmonious relationship that Indonesia and Egypt share, there is a gap and an imbalance," he added. According to the deputy minister, Indonesia always considers Egypt an important partner, but Egypt does not see Indonesia the same way. "This reality proves that the current relationship between the two countries lacks balance," Fachir, who served as an Indonesian ambassador to Egypt, explained. The inequality in the relationship emerged after Indonesia successfully achieved international acknowledgement for its independence. Based on Fachir's doctoral research, the imbalanced relationship is clear in aspects such as in the formation of diplomatic representation of the two countries, the frequency of official visits, and cooperation in trading. In addition, some obstacles have emerged that weaken the relations between the two nations. Fachir also noted that the opportunity to improve economic cooperation has not been well explored. Diplomatic relations at the governmental and public levels between Indonesia and Egypt have yet to be established completely. "To realize a reciprocal relationship, Indonesia has to show its class to be acknowledged by the international community, including Egypt," Fachir remarked. Egypt was the first country that recognized Indonesia's independence and the first one that signed a friendship agreement with Indonesia, followed by the formation of diplomatic representation in Cairo and Jakarta in 1950-1951. "Egypt is the country where Indonesians took their study since before the 19th century," Fachir pointed out. The relationship between Indonesia and Egypt is historical and even emotional. There is potential to elevate the relations to higher strategic level than before. "Therefore, cooperation between the two countries can be balanced, meaningful, and mutual," Fachir affirmed.
