International community has no recipe for settling conflict in Syria - diplomat

UNITED NATIONS, August 7. /TASS/. International community does not have a full understanding today of what should be done to take the process of peace settlement of the conflict in Syria out of a deadlock, the Russian ambassador to the UN, Vitaly Churkin said on Friday after the Security Council had passed a resolution on tracking down those guilty of chemical attacks in Syria. Churkin explained for the absence of progress in the efforts to resolve the crisis by Western countries’ reluctance to cooperate with Damascus in the sphere of struggle with terrorism. He hailed Friday’s resolution as an important demonstration of the Security Council’s ability to work together for the sake settling various problems "I hope this will help us to continue our joint work in the political direction," Churkin said. He indicated that the Security Council might pass a statement in support of efforts of the UN special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, already next week. Some "short ways", which the Western countries designed at the outset of the Syrian crisis for toppling President Bashar al-Assad, have failed to deliver the desired results, he said. "In reality, they only aggravated the situation," Churkin said. "We still don’t have a full understanding of what is to be done. One element that’s clear somehow is the unacceptance of the paramount necessity to concentrate on the terrorist threat in Syria and Iraq by our Western counterparts." He recalled that Moscow put forward a concept of an antiterrorist front in Syria and Iraq some time ago but the idea did not get the needed support. "A this moment, we don’t have a necessary unity of efforts on the part of the international community, mostly because the U.S. and other Western countries represented on the Security Council show reluctance to cooperate with the Syrian government in this joint struggle," Churkin said.
