Iranˈs security doctrine based on defense, effective deterrent: Minister

Tehran, Sept 16, IRNA – Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said Iranˈs national security doctrine is based on defense and effective deterrent strategies. He made the remarks while addressing a gathering of military college students in Turkmenistan. He said that aggression and hostility towards any country have no place in Iran's defense policies. In his remarks, he also said that the armed forces in Iran gained strength from two major sources, namely their close connection with the public and the support of a powerful leader. He described Iran as a country which has the brilliant record of confronting enemies for eight years in its history and has managed to tarnish the forged "powerful" images of hegemonic countries. He said Iran strongly believed it has to own such a power that no enemies could ever dare to invest any hopes in gaining anything from Iran or threatening it. Highlighting the special position of neighboring countries especially Turkmenistan in Iran's foreign policy, the general said Tehran held that security in other countries would help promote development process and prosperity of the Iranian nation. He went on to comment on regional developments and termed extremism, terrorism and violence as factors which threaten regional and international security. He said confronting such threats demanded convergence and unity among regional states. The Iranian minister is in Turkmenistan on a two-day visit./end
