Iran backs idea of talks between Syria government, opposition in Moscow

MOSCOW, December 17. /TASS/. Tehran supports an idea of holding talks between Syrian government and opposition in Moscow, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African countries Hossein Amir Abdollahian said on Wednesday. “We back Moscow’s idea to hold a meeting between authorities and moderate opposition in Syria,” he noted, adding that “Tehran agreed on an idea of nationwide dialogue.” The Iranian deputy foreign minister recalled that “first round of nationwide dialogue before conferences dubbed Geneva-1 and Geneva-2 was held in Tehran.” “We note the Moscow initiative, because Iran and Russia have a common position over Syria’s future,” he added. “Despite massive pressure exerted on Syria that country continues a correct and successful policy in the struggle against terrorism,” the Iranian diplomat noted, adding that “We will give our strong support to Syria.” On Tuesday, Abdollahian had a meeting with Russian presidential special envoy for the Middle East and African states, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, voicing confidence that “the dialogue between opposition and incumbent authorities may have a good outcome.” “In its steps Russia adheres to a common principle, common strategy over the current situation in Syria,” he added, noting that “In particular, this concerns preservation of territorial integrity and unity of Syrian nation.” Bashar Assad is a legitimate president of Syria, Abdollahian noted. “Any decision regarding Syria’s future should be taken only by Syrian people,” he added.
