Iran Backs Rights Of Canada Indigenous People : Official

Tehran, Oct 16, IRNA – A Judiciary official said that Iran backed rights of Canadian indigenous people just the way it defends rights of all oppressed people across the world. Head of the Judiciary Office for Human Rights Mohammad Javad Larijani made the remarks in a meeting with the leader of the Canadian indigenous people Terry Nelson here on Tuesday. He termed the indigenous people as the cultural wealth of the Canadian government. He said Iran will voice its strong support for the Canadian indigenous people just the way it defends rights of Bahraini, Iraqi, Afghan and Palestinian nations. Larijani said the West was using the media power to impose its own human rights version on world countries. He further expressed regret that Canada was engaged in massacring and ethnic cleansing of indigenous people instead of investing on their rich cultural heritage and talents. Nelson appreciated Iran’s support for Canada’s indigenous people and pointed to cases of human rights violations in his country. He said young people belonging to ethnic groups in Canada have been kept in misery and poverty by the Canadian government which has denied their access to university education as well as their very basic rights as citizens. Stressing that the calamities and restrictions imposed on Canadian indigenous groups are very harsh, he said all international documents approve that the situation of Canadian ethnic groups equals to ethnic cleansing. Nelson called on the Iranian government and nation to help indigenous groups in Canada to get their voices heard in the world and fight the oppression they are suffering from./end
