Iran calls for shift of UNSC approach toward country’s N-program

TEHRAN, Nov. 18 (MNA) – Iran’s UN envoy Khoshroo called for a fundamental change in UNSC and IAEA’s approaches toward Iran’s nuclear program that would cancel all resolutions against the country Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo addressing the meeting of UN General Assembly on Tuesday presented the Islamic Republic’s fundamental views on the peaceful nuclear activities in regard to the annual report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). “In today’s world, the nations’ need to energy, especially electricity, has been steadily growing and as such it is imperative to make maximum use of clean energy resources without leaving any adverse effect on climate conditions,” said the UN envoy. Khoshroo highlighted the role of nuclear energy in the advancement of developing countries, adding the main responsibility of the IAEA under the Agency’s status is to assist member states in research, development and application of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. In regard to the implementation and improvement of safeguards, the rights of the parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) must be respected without any restrictions, he added. “Using peaceful nuclear energy and related technologies to develop Iran’s economic, scientific and technical dimensions is of utmost importance and the unalienable rights of parties to the NPT in producing and using nuclear energy including enrichment must be fully respected,” he said. Khoshroo voiced his dissatisfaction over the ongoing efforts to limit the use of peaceful nuclear energy under the pretext of non-proliferation, adding the Islamic Republic according to its religious, strategic and international principles has always spurned the use of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear weapons. “The fundamental shift in the Security Council's approach toward Iran’s nuclear program must be at the same time accompanied by similar changes in the IAEA’s Board of Governors and followed by the cancelation of all resolutions against Iran,” he said. Khoshroo further maintained that Iran has implemented all voluntary measures under the roadmap signed with the IAEA, saying the country expects Amano’s final assessment on the resolution of all past and present outstanding issues of Iran’s nuclear activities to be closed ‘once and for all’ by December 15. http://en.mehrnews.com/news/112056/Iran-calls-for-shift-of-UNSC-approach-toward-country-s-N-program
