Iran Cautions Foreign Powers Against Military Intervention In Syria

Tehran, June 13, IRNA – Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast on Tuesday cautioned foreign powers against military intervention in Syria. In reaction to statements made by UK Foreign Secretary William Hague, the spokesman said that military intervention will not help settle the Syrian crisis. “Military intervention will deteriorate the situation in Syria. Certain states are seeking to disrupt stability in the Middle East to serve the Zionist regime.” He warned the western governments against military intervention in Syria and said that settlement of the Syrian crisis needs to adopt precautionary measures. Responding to a question about returning former Managing-Director of Bank Melli of Iran Mahmoud Khavari, he said that international arrest warrant is out for the individual to come to Iran to stand trial. He said that consultations have been made with Canadian Embassy in Tehran and the Canadian liaison officer has been invited to Tehran from Islamabad to ne notify of the case. He undertook to follow up the case and Iran awaits the Canadian action to return Khavari to hear the graft charges in Tehran. Khavari was scheduled to attend Iranian Embassy in Canada to hear the charges, but, he did not show up. He said hat the Islamic Republic of Iran does not recognize double citizenship and Khavari escaped the law by defecting to Canada. The spokesman said that Canadian charge d’affaires has promised to return Khavari to Iran when he had been summoned to the Foreign Ministry. He said that dimensions of the huge financial corruption to which Khavari is an accomplice is under investigation./end
