Iran Conveys Protest Message To Australia Over Death Of Citizen

Tehran, Feb 19, IRNA – Iran voiced its protest to the Australian government after an Iranian asylum-seeker was killed and a number of other people were injured in a remote refugee camp in Papua New Guinea. During a meeting with Australian Ambassador to Tehran Paul Foley, the Foreign Ministryˈs Consular Affairs Director-General Seyyed Hossein Mir-Fakhar voiced Iranˈs protest and discontent towards the practice of violence and mistreatment which resulted in death of an Iranian citizen. He pointed to Iranˈs readiness for cooperation in the management of affairs related to the refugees affairs and called for revising the encounter with the refugees based on humanitarian principles and also immediate investigation into the cause of occurrence of such incident and also announcing the findings of such investigation. The Australian Ambassador, for his part, conveyed the regret of his government about the incident and underlined that all the issues raised by the Iranian official will be conveyed to his government and relay the response./end
