Iran decides about JCPOA based on its national interests: FM

Tehran, May 7, IRNA – The Iranian foreign minister said here that Tehran decides on the July 2015 nuclear deal based on its national interests. If US makes a wrong decision as predicted, it will meet with an appropriate response from Iran, Mohammad Javad Zarif said. Iran has made precise predictions for dealing with the May 12 US decision about whether Washington will suspend anti-Iran sanctions or not, Zarif said. Washington's withdrawal from the Iran Deal officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) will surely lead to the US isolation in the world, the foreign minister added. US President Donald Trump has threatened that he will not suspend anti-Iran sanctions once more. This is while many world leaders including the Europeans want to preserve the JCPOA , trying to remid Trump of the consequences for his decision. The Iranian foreign minister reiterated that Tehran's interests have to be preserved in the JCPOA, otherwise, Iran will properly respond to the US if it tries to put economic pressures on the country through different methods. Talking about a possible US temporary suspension of the anti-Iran sanctions, Zarif said 'No remarks about the issue can be made now. We should wait for the May 12 decision.' About his talks with the former US Secretary of State John Kerry in his recent New York visit, Zarif said he had held negotiations with different American politicians who were present in the intensive P5+1 nuclear talks with Iran but they are now out of the US administration. 'I talked with them in order to tell them the truth,' Zarif said adding the truth is that Iran has been loyal to the JCPOA, but the US was not faithful to the international deal. The US unfaithfulness indicates that Washington is untrustworthy, Zarif stressed. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has already confirmed 11 times Iran's commitment to the 2015 deal between the country and the six world powers- US, UK, France, Russia, China and Germany. About Kerry's influence on Trump administration, Zarif said all individuals who are politically influential in the US can play a leading role in the process of decision making in that country. 1378/IRNA
