Iran Expresses Concern About Military Coup In Thailand, Calls For Democratic Election

Tehran, May 26, IRNA – Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham on Sunday expressed concern about military coup and the spread of unrest in Thailand, calling for restoration of law and order by the democratically-elected government. According to the ministryˈs Media Diplomacy Department, she underlined the need for restoration of peace and security in Thailand. She said that Thailand as an Iranian friendly country must hold a democratic election involving all the political parties and groups with different perspectives. She was optimistic that an elected government will soon launch its activities in the country. Thai army in an unexpected move on May 20 declared martial law with the aim of establishing order and stability in the country after six months of unrest and political violence. The military coup came after months of anti-government protests in Thailand. Martial law allows the army to restrict commutations and inspect the people in addition to preventing public gatherings./end
