Iran to gain only political benefits by staying in nuclear deal - Russian expert

UNITED NATIONS, July 24. /TASS/. By staying in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) for Iran’s nuclear program, Tehran may gain political benefits but it will all the same lose its economic partners, Editor-in-Chief of Russia in Global Affairs magazine and Research Director at the Valdai Discussion Club Fyodor Lukyanov told reporters. "All Europeans say the same thing - that all this [Washington’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal - TASS] is wrong but it is impossible to make companies invest in Iran if they face the risk of US sanctions," the expert said. According to him, "the US dominance in the global economy is crucial." "The question is whether Iran will continue to pretend that the deal is still in effect of defiantly pull out of it, which is what, in my opinion, Trump wants to achieve, particularly through his recent remarks towards Rouhani," Lukyanov said. "If the Iranians work smarter and stay in the deal, it will ensure a more favorable political situation for them but economic benefits are questionable," he concluded. US President Donald Trump tweeted earlier, warning Iranian President Hassan Rouhani of "consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before" in response to Rouhani's statement that a war with Iran would be "the mother of all wars". Iran nuclear deal issue In 2015, Iran and six major powers (five member states of the United Nations Security Council - Russia, the United States, France, the United Kingdom and China - and Germany) agreed on the final Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which particularly stipulated the removal of sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear program. On May 8, Trump announced Washington’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. He said that old sanctions on Iran would be restored and new ones would be introduced in case Tehran attempted to pursue its nuclear ambitions. In the wake of Trump’s decision, the leaders of Great Britain, Germany and France called on other participants in the deal to continue fulfilling it. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that Tehran would not abandon the JCPOA and would continue to comply with its obligations. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Washington’s withdrawal from the JCPOA would violate the United Nations Security Council’s resolution. He added that Russia would seek to maintain the agreement despite US plans to resume sanctions against Iran. Read more
