Iran, Mexico mark 50th anniv. of diplomatic ties

MEXICO CITY, Dec. 22 (MNA) – Unveiling a joint issue stamp, Iran and Mexico celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations since 1964. The ceremony was attended by Iran’s Ambassador to Mexico City Jalal Kalantari and Director General for Africa and the Middle East at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, María Carmen Oñate Muñoz. A number of Foreign Ministry officials and ambassadors of several other countries to Mexico also took part in the ceremony. During the ceremony, Kalantari and Ms. Oñate Muñoz stressed the two countries’ willingness to expand bilateral cooperation and friendly relations. An exhibition of photographs and historical documents belonging to Iran-Mexico bilateral relations opened on the sidelines of the ceremony at the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On 15 October 1964, formal diplomatic relations were established between Iran and Mexico and embassies were soon opened in each nation’s capitals. Iran and Mexico have enjoyed increasingly close political and economic relations over the years, particularly in sectors of trade, science and technology, as well as the oil industry. Mexico is Iran's principal trading partner in Latin America.
