Iran Proposes Formation Of A Committee By NAM's Troika, Syria Neighbors

Tehran, Aug 29, IRNA – Head of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said here Wednesday Iran proposed formation of a committee by troika of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and neighbors of Syria to find a solution for the country's crisis. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the second day of NAM ministerial meeting , Boroujerdi said a committee should be formed by Egypt, Iran and Venezuela, as the previous, current and future presidents of NAM, as well as Iraq and Lebanon, as neighbors of Syria, to discuss the ongoing crisis in that country and find a way out of the Syrian problem. Boroujerdi who has recently returned from Syria where he held talks with President Bashar Al-Assad, said that the Syrian president has "voiced his support for any plan proposed by Iran to settle the Syrian crisis." Asked about possible stepping down of president Assad from his post, Boroujerdi said, "Dismissal of a legitimate president before the end of his term is an act of dictatorship." "However, President Assad said that at the end of his term in 2014, he would run for presidency, like other candidates, and it will be the Syrians who decide about their next president," Boroujerdi said. He added that Damascus has also voiced readiness to hold talks with Syrian opposition groups./end
