Iran rejects UN human rights resolution as 'politically-motivated'

TEHRAN, Nov. 16 (MNA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi has dismissed as 'politically-motivated' a UN resolution critical of the country’s human rights record, saying Tehran attaches no value to any resolution adopted based on ulterior political motives. Ghasemi made the remarks on Tuesday, a day after the 3rd Committee of the United Nations General Assembly passed a Canada-drafted resolution criticizing the human rights situation in Iran. "Unfortunately, the resolution has been developed and approved without taking into account the realities of the Islamic Republic of Iran, based solely on a selective and confrontational approach, and pursuing certain political objectives," he noted. Ghasemi underlined that Iran, based on its principled policy, opposes any instrumental and political use of human rights against independent countries. "The United Nations human rights mechanisms should not be subject to political games of the great powers and the hostility of some countries against other communities," said he. The bitter historic irony in this resolution is the convergence of the Zionist regime, the Saudi regime and the few number of countries in the region that are devoid of democracy and freedom and those who are the true supporters and promoters of terrorism, violence and extremism, Ghasemi stressed.
