Iran says respects Afghan people’s votes: statement

TEHRAN,July 10(MNA) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Wednesday saying that Tehran respects the Afghan people’s votes and supports final winner of the country’s presidential election who will be declared after the complaints and irregularities are investigated. Afghanistan’s future success depends on forming an inclusive government which will be based on the Afghan nation’s votes, the statement said. Iran also described the high turnout in the presidential election in Afghanistan as an “epic” and said it showed people’s firm determination and “political maturity” to determine their fate through polls. It stressed that the international community and Afghanistan’s neighbors, specifically Iran, expect a peaceful transition of power in the country. Iran attaches great importance to Afghanistan’s security, stability, territorial integrity and national unity and will not accept any move that would lead to instability in the country, the statement added. The Foreign Ministry said that the process of election should be completed by considering the rightful demands of the candidates based on a full, accurate, transparent and fair investigation into irregularities. The statement went on to say that problems in Afghanistan should be resolved by Afghans themselves and foreign interference will just complicate the situation further. The preliminary results of run-off election in Afghanistan showed that Ashraf Ghani won 56.44 percent of the votes. However, Abdullah Abdullah's camp rejected the results on Monday, saying the result was invalid as it did not throw out all the fraudulent votes, according to Reuters. The final results will be announced on July 22.
