Iran vice-speaker hopes for establishment of an Asian Parliament in near future

Tehran, Nov 17, IRNA – Vice-Speaker of Majlis (Iranian Parliament) Mohammad-Hassan Abutorabifard on Monday expressed hope that an Asian Parliament would come into existence in the near future through contributions of the Asian governments. Abutorabifard made the remarks in a ceremony to mark the 8th anniversary formation of Asian Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU). In a meeting in Tehran in presence of 40 members, the Asian Parliamentary Assembly was upgraded into Asian Inter-Parliamentary Union, Abutorabifard said. The charter of the AIPU as the first political body of the Asian continent was then approved in Tehran after consultations with academics and experts from the member states, Abutorabifard added. He appreciated efforts made by Hadi Nejad Hosseinian, the Iranian secretary-general of the AIPU who had successfully led the Asian Inter-Parliamentary Union for the past eight years. Pakistan has been elected as the new head of the AIPU and its Second Executive Council and Seventh Plenary Session are due to be held in Lahore, Pakistan. /end
