Iranian ambassador meets UN Syria envoy

TEHRAN,Oct.24(MNA)– On Tuesday, Iranian Ambassador to Syria Mohammad Reza Sheibani held talks in Damascus with Lakhdar Brahimi, the UN-Arab League special envoy on Syria, on the latest developments in Syria and the efforts made to end the conflict in the country. Commenting on Iran’s support for the ceasefire plan between the conflicting parties in Syria during Eid al-Adha, Sheibani expressed hope that the efforts to resolve the Syrian issue would come to fruition. Eid al-Adha is an Islamic holiday which starts on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah (October 26) and lasts several days. At the meeting, Brahimi briefed the Iranian diplomat on the latest measures taken to help the conflicting parties in Syria accept ceasefire. Brahimi also expressed satisfaction with his recent trip to Tehran and said that the trip had beneficial results, particularly Iran’s proposal for ceasefire. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sheibani described the Syrian government’s view toward the proposal on ceasefire as positive and said that Iranian and Syrian officials support the proposal. However, it is important that the Syrian armed groups grasp the fact that the destruction of their own country is not to the benefit of themselves and the Syrian people, he added.
