Iranian Army to hold war games to mark liberation of Khorramshahr

TEHRAN, May 22 (MNA) –Iranian ground troops will hold military exercises in Isfahan Province on Wednesday to mark the anniversary of the liberation of Khorramshahr in 1982, Iranian Army commander announced on Monday. Iran liberated the southwestern port city of Khorramshahr from Iraqi occupation on May 24, 1982 during the 1980-1988 Iran–Iraq war. The Iraqis had captured the city early in the war on October 26, 1980. Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan said that ground troops will practice the tactics of asymmetric warfare against the hypothetical enemy during the war games, entitled Beit ol-Moqaddas. “Boosting the vitality and liveliness of units is one of the features of the war games, and we intend to place soldiers and troops in real combat,” he said. “So our forces will always remain up-to-date and will be prepared to repel possible threats and dangers.” Pourdastan also said that the main purpose of the exercises is to test new weapons which have been designed and manufactured by the Iranian Defense Ministry. In addition, he said that ground troops will employ new military tactics which have been worked out by Iranian strategists.
