Iranian president lauds top agricultural producers

TEHRAN, Dec. 28 (MNA) – President Rouhani attended a ceremony on Sunday morning to commemorate top agriculture producers in Iran. 330 wheat producers under the title of National Association of Expert Wheat Growers also took part in the 29th commemoration of prominant agricultural producers. During the ceremony, 64 noteworthy farmers were lauded for their achievements in the field of agricultural production. President Rouhani stressed that the farmers’ income must be increased otherwise they would "abandon their profession" adding that "the agricultural product is sold well in the market but the farmer receives too little for it. We must endeavor to amend this." While maintaining that self-sufficiency is not possible in all agricultural products, Rouhani said that, "we have, however, the capacity to obtain self-sufficiency in many products, such as the rapeseed oil which some countries have labeled as the Yellow Revolution." The Yellow Revolution is attributed to the growth, development and adoption of new varieties of oilseeds and complementary technologies which nearly doubled oilseeds production in 1996-97. “The government will spare no effort in increasing value-added agricultural products so as to serve as incentive to step up productions,” said Rouhani, stressing that agriculture is the pillar of Iran’s economy. Minister of Agriculture jihad Mahmoud Hojjati, while maintaining that the ministry's budget has been tripled for the next fiscal year, referred to the statistics on the prominant agricultural producers’ records adding that Iran has enjoyed a considerable increase in its domestic agricultural productions including the rapeseed oil, barley, pistachios, olives, pomegranate and apples among others.
