Iran's Atomic Energy head sets off for Japan to expand nuclear safety coop.

TEHRAN, Nov. 01 (MNA) – Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi heading a delegation left for Tokyo early Sunday to hold talks with Japanese senior officials on nuclear safety cooperation. The announcement was made by the AEOI Spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi who added that Salehi’s visit to Tokyo would last four days. According to Kamalvandi, the AEOI head is scheduled for an interview with Japan’s official news agency Kyodo News, a meeting with nuclear scientists, talks with officials from the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) and Japan’s Nuclear Energy Agency, as well as delivering speeches at the University of Tokyo and the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA). Kamalvandi added that Salehi and his accompanying delegation are also slated to attend and speak at the 61st Pugwash Conference on nuclear disarmament to be held on 1-5 November in the city of Nagasaki. The AEOI chief will also attend a ceremony there on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the US atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Earlier this October, Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida visited Tehran and held talks with a number of Iranian senior officials. In a joint statement issued with FM Mohammad Javad Zarif, the two sides stressed their agreement on taking the IAEA safeguard measures for closer cooperation on nuclear safety after the implementation of JCPOA. The statement also includes exchanging expert teams to study and conduct projects on boosting safety at nuclear sites will be another part of the prospective agreement. The two sides have also called for launching a comprehensive cooperation council between the two countries, whose area of concern will span a large array of fields and engage many ministries and organizations in Iran and Japan.
