Islamic cooperation body moves to set up human rights watchdog committee

JEDDAH (A.A) - December 7, 2011 - Organization of Islamic Cooperation, or OIC, is set to establish an independent human rights watchdog committee, chief of the organization has said. OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu urged all member countries in a meeting Wednesday in Jeddah to work hard to make sure that the committee achieved "the credibility it deserves." Ihsanoglu said the committee would have no prosecution power but only a mandate to intra-organization inspection within the member states. "This is a turning point for OIC," Ihsanoglu said.
