Islamic organization eager to extend humanitarian aid to Syria

ANKARA (A.A) - March 8, 2012 - The Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) launches initiatives to extend humanitarian aid to Syrian people who are facing problems due to increasing violence in the country. OIC executives said that many Syrian people had to leave their houses and cities due to clashes going on for about a year. International organizations cannot extend aid to these people as the Syrian administration does not let them. OIC wants to intervene the humanitarian crisis in Syria, and has applied to Syrian administration and asked to extend assistance to Syrian people.  The Syrian administration returned OIC's call for a long time saying that "there is no humanitarian crisis in Syria, and therefore there is no need for help"; however it is expected to take this call into consideration. In case Syrian administration permits, an OIC delegation, headed by deputy secretary general for humanitarian affairs, will go to the country and extend necessary assistance to Syrian people.  OIC executives say they have got positive signals from the Syrian administration that it can allow humanitarian aid. Moreover, OIC has also intervened for a solution in Iraq, which is facing sectarian problems after withdrawal of the United States. OIC will hold a meeting with participation of all segments on Iraq. The definite time and place of the meeting are not clear yet. The organization will also bring together groups in Afghanistan. Efforts are under way for the meeting. Senegal is the acting president of OIC right now. Turkey has run candidacy to undertake the rotating presidency in 2014. The other candidates are Iran, Azerbaijan and Indonesia.  The organization will first seek a compromise among the four candidates, and hold an election if no compromise is reached. OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu's mandate will end at the end of 2014.
