Islamic organization head says Syrian regime has not done what it has to do

GIRNE (A.A) - November 28, 2011 - The secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said on Monday that the Syrian regime had not done what it had to do. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said Arab League had imposed sanctions on Syria because the Syrian regime had not fulfilled its liabilities. "We have held significant contacts and had a silent diplomacy with the Syrian regime for months, but all efforts have failed," Ihsanoglu told AA correspondent in Girne, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Ihsanoglu said he had sent a special envoy to Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, sent a message to Syria, and OIC had held various talks with Syrian ministers. "However, none of diplomatic initiatives, neither other international organizations' nor the Arab League's nor our initiatives bear fruit," Ihsanoglu said. Ihsanoglu hoped Syrian people would not be harmed, and a high-level meeting would take place in Jeddah on Wednesday. "I am expecting a new approach and stance from this meeting," Ihsanoglu also said.
