Issue of constitutional reform in Syria nearing positive outcome - Russia’s chief negotiator

SOCHI, July 30. /TASS/. The issue of forming Syria’s constitutional committee is nearing a positive outcome, Russian president’s special envoy for Syria, Alexander Lavrentyev, said on Monday. "Basic attention now is focused on issues of the constitutional reform," he said. "We are nearing a point when we see some progress on that matter." He recalled that a month and a half ago the Syrian government had issued its list of candidates to the constitutional committee. "A couple of weeks ago, the same list came from the opposition. Now, discussions are focusing on the third group - from representatives of civil society," he said. "After that, we will agree procedural aspects on how the constitutional committee will work. But it is a matter of future. On our part, we are doing our best to help [UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Syria] Staffan de Mistura launch the constitutional reform," Lavrentyev added.
