Italy Backs Iran's Presence In Geneva 2 Conference On Syria: Italian Senator

Tehran, Jan 5, IRNA – The head of the Italian parliamentary delegation to Iran, Pier Ferdinando Casini said on Saturday that his country backs Iran's participation in talks to put an end to regional crises, including Geneva 2 Conference on Syria. Casini, chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, made the remarks in a meeting with head of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Alaeddin Boroujerdi. The Italian senator termed Iran as a very influential country in the region, calling for further expansion of political, economic and cultural ties between Tehran and Rome. Casini reiterated that Italy believes that Iran is entitled to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. On the humanitarian crisis in Syria, Casini said that peace talks between Syrian warring sides is the only way out of the current situation in the country. The head of the Italian delegation invited Boroujerdi to visit Italy. In the meantime, the head of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission said that given Italys positive image in public opinion of the Iranian nation, Majlis wants enhanced relations with Italy in different areas. Boroujerdi made clear that establishing good relations with world countries is the top priority of Irans foreign policy. He reiterated that Iran has developed nuclear technology within the frameworks of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and has never sought nuclear weapons and will never do in the future. Talks between Iran and European countries, such as Italy can help bolster peace and stability in the region./end
