Japan, China, S. Korea to Work Closely to Fight Infectious Diseases

Kyoto, Nov. 29 (Jiji Press)--Japan, China and South Korea on Sunday agreed to work more closely to fight infectious diseases, drawing a lesson from the spread of Ebola and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome in some countries. The three confirmed the stance in a joint statement adopted at a ministerial meeting here in the western Japan city that brought together Japanese Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare Yasuhisa Shiozaki, Chinese National Health and Family Planning Commission Minister Li Bin and South Korean Health and Welfare Minister Chung Chin-youb. At the meeting, the three ministers agreed to strengthen information-sharing on infectious diseases and cooperation to deal with an increase in superbugs resistant to antibiotics and other drugs. "The issue of drug resistance significantly affects not only humans but also livestock raising," Shiozaki told a news conference after the meeting, adding that the three countries agreed on the need to tackle the issue across their governments. In April 2016, Japan will host a ministerial meeting on the issue among countries in the Asia-Pacific region, he also said. The three-way meeting of health ministers was the eighth of its kind. The next meeting will take place in South Korea in 2016. END
