Japan Concerned about China's High-Handed Maritime Policy

Tokyo, July 2 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Defense Ministry expresses strong concern over what it sees as China's continued high-handed maritime policy, in an annual white paper, it was learned Thursday. According to an outline, the paper refers to China's land reclamation in the South China Sea and says Beijing continues a high-handed maritime approach such as an attempt to change the status quo with force. But the white paper also says China is interested in measures to avoid contingency situations in the ocean, citing the resumption of talks between Tokyo and Beijing on creating an air and maritime liaison mechanism between the two countries. The paper warns that there is a possibility that North Korea has already acquired the ability to miniaturize nuclear weapons small enough to mount on missiles, citing Pyongyang's claim that it has successfully test-fired a ballistic missile from a submarine. The paper also says the Islamic State militant group is becoming prominent for its military strength and funding ability. The white paper will be publicized after being adopted by the cabinet late this month. END
