Korean Youth Movement Boasts of Glorious History

Pyongyang, August 28 (KCNA) -- Greeting the 9th Congress of the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League, people in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea recall the glorious history covered by the Korean youth movement under the guidance of the peerlessly great persons. Regarding the youth as the most vital unit and the powerful force propelling the social development, President Kim Il Sung began his revolutionary activities with the youth movement. He formed the Young Communist League of Korea on August 28, Juche 16 (1927) with genuine core elements of a new generation. The formation of the league was a historic event that declared the birth of a genuine revolutionary youth vanguard organization and brought about a turn in the development of youth movement. Then he rallied young Koreans around the organization and aroused them to the armed struggle against the Japanese imperialists. After all, the history of the youth movement in Korea was started under his energetic guidance. After the country's liberation from Japan's colonial rule, the President organized the Democratic Youth League of North Korea, a mass youth organization, to unite all the youths closely under the banner of democracy and push forward the building of a new society. In keeping with the establishment of socialist system in the DPRK and the requirements of the developing youth movement, he saw to it that the youth league was renamed the League of Socialist Working Youth of Korea (LSWYK) at its 5th Congress in May 1964. Leader Kim Jong Il called the youth league a political reserve of the Workers' Party of Korea, a reserve combat unit and detached force of the Supreme Commander and had led the league to fulfill its duty in accomplishing the Juche-based cause of Songun (military-first). At the conference of the LSWYK held in January 1996 to mark its 50th anniversary, he made sure that the LSWYK was developed into the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League. The birth of the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League was of weighty significance in making the league remain as the eternal youth organization of Kim Il Sung and successfully carrying forward to completion the revolutionary cause of Juche pioneered by him.
