Larijani: Crisis In Syria Should Be Resolved Only Through Diplomacy

Tehran, Sept 15, IRNA – Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said the Syrian problem is to be solved only through diplomatic ways. The speaker made the remarks here Saturday evening during a joint press conference with his visiting Iraqi counterpart Usama al-Nujaifi. Larijani stressed that military operations will solve no problem in Syria. He hoped that his talks with al-Nujaifi on expansion of bilateral cooperation as well as the settlement of the Syrian crisis would be fruitful. Stressing that cooperation and political exchanges between Iran and Iraq could help control terrorist activities and regional crises, he expressed hope that positive negotiations between Tehran and Baghdad would increase. Terming as positive the trade exchanges between the two countries, the Iranian speaker said bilateral cooperation could even go beyond the present level of the annual dlrs. 11 billion. Turning to the terrorist activities in the region, he said the US has now realized that military action in Syria will create many problems for Washington. Larijani reiterated that any military attack against Syria without the United Nations Security Council permission will be in fact violation of the international law which leads to further global and regional insecurity. He believed military action against Syria will have very dire consequences and set a fire in the region. The Iraqi official, for his part, said cooperation between Baghdad and Tehran to settle the Syrian crisis is of high significance. He said not military intervention but political negotiations which would engage all warring parties could pave the way for establishment of democracy there. The Iraqi speaker referred to cooperation among Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Saudi Arabia as an appropriate way to bring democracy to Syria. He said any military intervention in Syria on the pretext of eliminating chemical weapons will only spread crisis in the whole region with Iraq suffering the most. Al-Nujaifi said his government believes that the West is only after disarmament not saving the Syrian nation so Baghdad expects the international community to prevent outbreak of war in the region. He explained that the plan by the Iraqi parliament for settlement of peace in Syria suggests all-out ceasefire in the country, withdrawal of warring sides and foreign forces and fixing a timetable for a democratic elections the winner of which would get to power in Syria. Al-Nujaifi, the Speaker of Council of Representatives of Iraq, started his three-day visit to Tehran on Saturday at the invitation of his Iranian counterpart./end
