Lavrov to discuss security, economy issues during visit to Malaysia August 5 - 6

MOSCOW, August 4. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will pay a visit to Malaysia on August 5 - 6 to attend events of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the East Asia Summit (EAS), the Russian Foreign Ministry reported on Tuesday. Lavrov will exchange views with colleagues from the Asia-Pacific states "on current global and regional developments, including the Islamic State terrorist group’s intensified activity, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and the nuclear problem of the Korean Peninsula." During the meetings the sides will also place a special emphasis on the "development of the economic component of the dialogue partnership, implementation of Russia’s proposals on boosting trade and mutual investment, improvement of the regional transport and energy infrastructure," the ministry said. During his stay in Kuala Lumpur, the Russian foreign minister will take part in a foreign ministers’ meeting in the Russia-ASEAN format, meet foreign ministers of the East Asia Summit and attend the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) on security issues. Lavrov will hold bilateral meetings with a number of his counterparts form the Asia-Pacific states. During the first event its participants will discuss issues of preparation of a comprehensive action plan for the development of Russia-ASEAN cooperation for 2016-2020, which is to be submitted to the leaders for approval. Discussion of issue related to responding to global threats will be continued at the ASEAN Regional Forum. "There will also be a discussion on the most pressing regional and international issues, including the situation on the Korean Peninsula, in the Middle East, in Afghanistan, as well as on matters related to territorial disputes in the South China Sea," the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.
