Lavrov: Iran N-program Under IAEA Supervision

Moscow, Oct 24, IRNA – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that Iran's nuclear program is under supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency and inspectors are making regular visits to Iranian nuclear sites. In an interview with Russian Racisca Gazetta, Lavrov said no evidence exists to substantiate that Iran has a weapons program. He said all Iran's nuclear program has been under IAEA full control and Iran is enriching 4.5 percent uranium to secure fuel supply for power plant. He said that some partners question Iran's need to fuel because Russia has undertaken fuel supply for Bushehr Power Plant. He added that producing fuel is not prohibited by Non-Proliferation Treaty. Lavrov made it clear quoting Iran's Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi as saying that Iran produces 20 percent enriched uranium to fuel Tehran Medical Research Reactor. He noted that unfortunately the IAEA failed to make arrangements with the nuclear states to supply fuel for Tehran Research Reactor despite repeated demands from the Islamic Republic of Iran. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that Iran prefers to buy 20 percent fuel for Tehran medical research reactor, because, producing 20 percent enriched uranium is very expensive. US Administrastion broke a promise it made beforehand to supply fuel to Tehran medical reactor despite an initiative taken by Brazilian former President Lula da Silva and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2010./end
