Lavrov marks role outside players could play in pushing Syrian opposition to talks

SOCHI, May 12. /TASS/. To continue the process of political settlement in Syria potentials of outside players must be used so that they push the Syrian opposition to talks, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry. Positions of Russia and the US on this issue are very close, he said. "We are confident that the process must be led by Syrians themselves, that this process must be very representative, but taking into consideration contradictions inside the opposition groups and between them, it is very important that all outside players having influence on this or that group push them towards the start of talks on the basis of Geneva communique of June 30, 2012 with the aim of its full implementation," the top Russian diplomat said. "We work on finding optimal ways, ideal formats for the implementation of the Geneva communique," he continued. "The task to settle all problems through a direct dialogue of all Syrian sides and achieve an agreement on necessary reforms, on a transit on the basis of universal consensus of the Syrian sides is the key task of this communique," he added. "We have tried in every way to encourage work in this direction," Lavrov said. "After a conference took place in Montreux two years ago, followed by Geneva talks between the delegation of the Syrian government and the delegation of the National Coalition, it became clear that for the success of these ‘exercises’ it is necessary to ensure representativeness of opposition delegations - not only the National Coalition, but many other opposition groups, first of all those inside Syria, as well as many groups consisting of migrants who are not part of the National Coalition," he said.
