Lavrov not to attend Iran-P5+1 talks Friday or Saturday - Deputy Foreign Minister Ryabkov

VIENNA, July 2. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will not attend talks of Iran and the six international negotiators on Tehran’s nuclear program (P5+1) in Vienna in the next two days, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Thursday. Asked when the Russian foreign minister could be expected in the Austrian capital, Ryabkov said: "I don’t know, anyway, not tomorrow. And I doubt on Saturday. That is, neither tomorrow, nor on Saturday." The deputy foreign minister said he is leaving Vienna for work on the BRICS summit. At the same time, he expressed confidence that the Iran-P5+1 agreement will be achieved. The Russian delegation remains in Vienna and will continue work. The P5+1 is the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, and France - plus Germany. Iran says it needs nuclear power to generate electricity, but Western powers led by the United States claim Tehran's eventual aim is to create nuclear weapons. At a meeting in Vienna in November 2014, the P5+1 and Tehran agreed to extend the deadline for a deal in the talks on Iran’s nuclear program to June 30, 2015. A regular round of talks between Iran and the P5+1 in Lausanne on April 2, 2015 ended with the conclusion of a joint comprehensive action plan on the Iranian nuclear program that was to have been adopted by the end of June. Sources have said the process could be extended by a few days beyond the deadline. As the plan is being implemented, all political and economic sanctions are to be lifted from Tehran. Read more
