Lawmaker: Deployment Of Patriot Missile Batteries In Turkey Escalates Tension

Tehran, Nov 27, IRNA -- Deputy Chairman of Majlis Commission on National Security and Foreign Policy Mohammad Hassan Asafari said on Monday that deployment Partriot missile batteries in Turkey on the border with Syria escalates tension in the region. He told IRNA, Iran opposes the deployment of missile batteries which can lead to regional conflicts and escalation of tension. Asafari said such action by the neighboring countries will bring militarization of the region and delays establishment of peace and stability. Turkey Foreign Ministry asked North Atlantic Organization on Wednesday for Patriot missiles to be stationed in its borderline with Syria to bolster its air defenses against its southern neighbor. According to a Turkish government statement: "The letter to NATO included the "formal request" that the alliance send anti-aircraft missile batteries. The statement added that the NATO Council would convene to consider the matter and NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that the request would be considered without delay./end
