Majlis Commission Reviews Developments In Iraq, Egypt

Tehran, Jan 6, IRNA – Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission on Sunday discussed latest developments in Iraq and Egypt, according to rapporteur of the Commission Hossein Naqavi Hosseini. The Iranian lawmakers stressed the necessity of Iran’s more active diplomacy in the region and the Muslim World in particular, Naqavi Hosseini said. Foreign Ministry officials including Deputy Foreign Minister Hassan Qashqavi were present at Majlis. Naqavi Hosseini said the lawmakers reiterated that Iran wants a calm and strong Egypt and is opposed to foreign intervention in the country’s internal affairs. In the meantime, Foreign Ministry official in charge of Iraqi affairs, Hossein Kanani-Moqaddam said opponents of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki have failed to undermine his government through carrying out terrorist attacks across the country, Naqavi Hosseini said. The senior lawmaker said that the Iraqi government is conducting a campaign against al-Qaeda-linked terrorist groups in the country which is highly supported by Iraqi people from all walks of life. He emphasized the importance of the upcoming elections in Iraq and said that some 270 parties and groups and 40 alliances have nominated to run for the poll so far. The rapporteur of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission added that all the lawmakers urged Tehran to play a more influential part in the regional issues./end
